Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Emine Dzhaparova on her Facebook account on 15 May wrote about the support group ‘Crimean Platform’ established in Saeim of Latvia and thanked Chairman of the Committee of Foreign Affairs of the Saeim Rihard Kols for the initiative.
President of the Republic of Latvia Egils Levits has previously confirmed his participation in the founding meeting of the ‘Crimean Platform’.
‘Crimean Platform’ is a new consultation-coordination political platform developed by Kiev, designated for making the international community reaction more efficient to occupation performed by Russia in 2014 more efficient and still going on as a challenge to its security. In its scope they expect to increase international pressure on Moscow in matters related to prevention of human rights and defence of victims of occupational regime in the peninsula.
Initiators actively suggest countries to join the platform as a field where respect to Ukraine and any other country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty on the international scale is recognized within the limits of the borders is declared.
The first inauguration meeting of the ‘Crimean Platform’ is planned on 23 August as a part of commemoration of the 30th anniversary of Independence on 23-24 August. According to the Deputy Head of the President Administration of Ukraine Igor Zhivkov, the meeting is not a formality that will be forgotten right away. The Crimean Charter (or the final declaration) will be signed there and the plot of the international activities regarding de-occupation of the peninsula is provided for.
The text of the Charter is being prepared very thoroughly – the document must make the foundation not only for security architecture of Ukraine, but also the area from the Baltic to Mediterranean Sea. To the countries that signed it will mean an obligation and imperative to include statements from the Charter to its policy.
According to Emine Dzhaparova, participation in a geopolitical initiative means not just support to Kiev seeking de-occupation of Crimea in a peaceful way, but also solidarity in faithfulness to the international law and common human values. Independent countries have a right of choice in foreign policy, and nobody has a right to change state borders by force.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba during the interview to the radio channel at the end of April indicated that Kiev did not foster illusions for fast progress, however, hopes that the meeting would restore the problem of Crimea occupation to the focus of the international political agenda and would contribute to development of specific mechanisms so practical issues of occupation could be addressed in a consistent and thorough manner. He expressed his hope that international representation would be proper for two days in August when Ukraine will celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of independence.
It seems that expectations are coming true. A Spokesperson of the Ukrainian President Iuliia Medel informed on 4 April that the initiative of ‘Crimean Platform’ was supported by countries such as the United Kingdom, Turkey, 10 countries in total.
President Gitanas Nausėda, making a speech on 3 May during the 230th anniversary of the first adopted Constitution of Rzeczpospolita in the Palace of Warsaw Kings, told that Lithuania would never recognize occupation of Crimea by Russia and would do everything to stop it (Presidents of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Ukraine participated there). The President of Lithuania announced he would participate in the meeting of the ‘Crimean Platform’.
On 12 May the President of Ukraine met the Chairwoman of the Lithuanian Seimas Viktorija Čmilyte-Nielsen to discuss de-occupation of Crimea, thanked Vilnius for support of his country sovereignty and reminded that since the beginning of the war in 2014 Lithuania was one of the first that stood up for Ukraine and invited Viktorija Čmilyte-Nielsen to take part in events of Independence on 23-24 August.
After a commemoration party of the Constitution of Rzeczpospolita, during the meeting of the President of Poland Andrei Duda and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Poland also announced he would participate in the meeting of the ‘Crimean Platform’.
President of the European Council Charles Michel confirmed about his participation in the inauguration meeting of the ‘platform’ to the President of Ukraine during a phone call already on 15 April and at the same time he indicated that the European Union would always support territorial integrity of Ukraine in the limits of borders accepted by international communities.
During the visit in Kiev on 6 May the U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed about his participation of the USA in the meeting of ‘Crimean Platform’ at the high level. The President of Ukraine asked Antony Blinken to pass the invitation to the U.S. President Joe Biden to participate in events of Independence.
Already after the visit of the Head of the U.S. diplomacy the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba during the program “Right to Power’ of the TV channel summarized that the United States confirmed three things on the matter of the ‘Crimean Platform’: Washington fully supports the initiative, representation of the USA at the highest level during the meeting on 23 August having an intention to draw the attention of the international community more efficiently and also to the problem of Crimea and an efficient solution of this problem, the United States would encourage other countries to make active participation in the movement of the Crimean Platform.
On 11 May Deputy of the U.S. Secretary of State Philip T. Reeker indicated the same, noted the importance of the attention of the international community for occupation of Crimea and militarization of the peninsula that followed for strategic consequences of the security situation in the region of the Black Sea.
On 12 May the press agency of the President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the President invited the President of Romania Klaus Iohannis to participate in the ‘Crimean Platform’. During the phone call leaders of the countries discussed a long-term militarization of temporarily occupied Crimea and the worsening humanitarian situation in the peninsula. The President of Romania confirmed that Ukraine would receive 100 thousand vaccines from his country, the President reserved another 100 thousand the same type of vaccines to another neighbour in the region Moldova.
The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Slovakia and Ukraine Ivan Korčok and Dmytro Kuleba during the press conference in Bratislava held on 13 May officially confirmed participation of the President of Slovakia Zuzana Čaputová in the meeting of the ‘Crimean Platform’. Dmytro Kuleba thanked Slovakia for its support to sovereignty of Ukraine and reminded that Slovakia was one of the first to demonstrate solidarity with Kiev when Russia started concentrating its forces at the border of Ukraine. Ivan Korčok indicated the necessity to never forget Crimea in Ukraine and seek its inevitable de-occupation.
Emine Dzhaparova during her interview to the TV channel Dom on 15 May informed about the decision not to announce the information about new countries supporting the initiative, because obvious cynical attempts of Moscow and statements seeking to manipulate and mislead the international community, for instance, announcing as if the Crimean Platform infringes on the territorial integrity of Russia when/although Moscow occupied the peninsula first in 2014. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine will announce the full list of countries that will join the initiative closer to the meeting date.
The fact that Moscow is frightened about the ‘Crimean Platform’ just proves the circumstance that the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine reminded at the end of April: the whole group is operating at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia that is dealing with the plan how to defeat the meeting of the platform.
The idea told by the Chairman of Medzhlis of the national meeting of Crimean Tatars Refat Chubarov about this topic told during his interview to the Ukrainian TV channel o 24 April, that Vladimir Putin and his team did not avoid ultimatums in order to deter countries from the ‘Crimean Platform’. Refat Chubarov told that he was convinced that when the President of Russia was talking to the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan in April, he was trying to ignore the initiative of Kiev.
Prior to that on 9 April when Volodymyr Zelensky met the President of Turkey he heard his support on the matters of Donbas and Crimea.
The loyal to Ukraine Crimean Tarts are still a real headache to the Russian occupational power. The Commissioner for Human rights in Ukraine Lyudmyla Denisova told on 18 May about a politically motivated prosecution of 93 representatives of this diaspora carried out by Moscow.
Vladimir Putin on 14 May declared as if Ukraine is made an antipode of Russia, in reply to this the Spokesperson of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Oleg Nikolenko reminded that the Ukrainian nation itself without looking at third parties make up their mind in regard to development of its country.
According to Oleg Nikolenko, neither Russian tanks nor the heralds of the toxic ‘Russian world’ managed and would not manage to stop transformation of Ukraine to a contemporary European democratic country. Geography cannot be changed, thus after the war between Russia and Ukraine and de-occupation of the Ukrainian territories the countries would have to live close to each other based on the mutual respect and not intrusion into matters of the neighbour.
It seems that after a ‘hussar-like’ attack, tearing off Crimea in 2014 Moscow did not find sound arguments; Moscow can hardly stop the initiative of the ‘Crimean Platform’ by their systematic attempts of insinuations and public representations of displeasure.
